Active Projects

Through our projects across Hawaiʻi, we carry out this vision grounded in community and place. Our team runs full cycle restoration operations across multiple active sites, combining integrated field work, purpose-built technology, and deep, sustained investment in people and the future of this place.

Capabilities

Our expertise and experience spans the full restoration lifecycle, from seed collection through long-term care. Whether you're starting a new project or building on work already underway, explore how we can partner with you below.

Native Forest Restoration

Downward arrow

We restore native forests through the full lifecycle of restoration, from seed to established tree. Our work spans dry forest, mesic forest, and other native ecosystems across Hawaiʻi, each restored with species and methods suited to that site's conditions. Terraware and GIS mapping track every plant, for cutting edge analysis and project visualization to tell the story of the plant's health and the habitat's growth.

Consulting & Planning

Downward arrow

Before any project begins, we work alongside partners and communities to develop a plan tailored to the site's ecological conditions, project goals, and long-term vision. Whether supporting forest restoration, agroforestry, wildfire mitigation, or other land stewardship initiatives, our planning process includes site assessment, species selection, operational planning, and implementation strategies. Drawing on lessons learned from projects across Hawaiʻi, we help organizations build resilient landscapes that support healthy ecosystems, thriving communities, and long-term climate resilience.

Seed Banking

Downward arrow

We collect and bank native seed to preserve genetic diversity and ensure a reliable supply of high-quality seed for restoration, agroforestry, and conservation efforts. Where projects require it, we can deploy off-grid, containerized seed labs for on-site seed processing and storage or develop a tailored seed banking setup that suits the project's needs. Terraformation-built seed banks are now operating across five Hawaiian islands, contributing to a more resilient statewide seed banking network. Through this work, we contribute to the Hawaiʻi Seed Bank Partnership and implement itʻs best practices.

Plant Nursery

Downward arrow

Our nurseries are a critical link in the full lifecycle of forest restoration, agroforestry, and native ecosystem management. A reliable seed source from our seed bank, paired with species-specific propagation and growth protocols, improves plant health and outplanting success. In addition to native forest species, we propagate tropical fruit trees, nut trees, traditional canoe crop trees, and native ferns to support a wide range of restoration, agroforestry, and community resilience initiatives. We operate nurseries across diverse climate zones on Hawaiʻi Island—from high-elevation wet forests to low-elevation dryland and coastal environments—with every plant tracked by Terraware throughout its lifecycle.

Agroforestry

Downward arrow

We design, install, and maintain food forests that combine native and productive species, supporting both ecosystem health and community food access. This work includes an operating orchard and baseyard at Kaiwiki and a functional food forest designed in partnership with Chef Peter Merriman, each managed with the same long-term care approach we bring to native forest restoration. We see Agroforestry as a model that is uniquely positioned to combine ecological restoration with local food production to bring multiple benefits to communities.
